House cleaning includes maintaining carpets and upholstered furniture throughout your home. Keeping these areas clean helps your space look fresh, comfortable, and welcoming. Adding proper upholstery care to your regular cleaning routine can prevent stains from becoming permanent damage.
A responsible housekeeper knows that wine stains on upholstery should be treated immediately. Acting fast increases your chances of removing the stain without needing harsh chemicals or aggressive cleaning methods.
Over time, I’ve learned several effective ways to remove old stains from upholstery:
1. Use a vacuum cleaner for house cleaning.
Cleaning the carpet using a vacuum cleaner
Vacuuming upholstery regularly helps prevent dust, crumbs, and debris from settling deep into the fabric. Even with old stains, you may be surprised at how much vacuuming alone can reduce discoloration.
For every housekeeper or maid, the first step in treating stains should always be vacuuming the entire area. Until loose particles are removed, it is difficult to see how serious the stain really is or determine the best treatment method.
2. Make sure you are aware of the house cleaning instructions.
Always check the cleaning codes on your furniture before attempting stain removal. These codes indicate whether water, solvents, or special cleaners should be used.
If your antique or vintage furniture does not have a cleaning code, perform a spot test on a hidden area of the upholstery first. In my house cleaning routine in Los Angeles, I usually start with water, vinegar, or vodka before using stronger chemical cleaners.
3. Give steam vacuum cleaning a try.
Steam helps loosen stubborn stains and makes them easier to treat if your furniture can be cleaned with water. For small areas, you can use the steam setting on an iron instead of pulling out a full steamer.
For water-safe fabrics, mix a small amount of dish soap with cool water. Use a wrung-out sponge and gently blot the stain. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this can weaken the fabric and cause pilling.
Rinse the sponge with clean water and blot again to remove soap residue. Dry the area thoroughly with a clean towel.
If your furniture cannot be cleaned with water, use a cloth dampened with vinegar or vodka to blot the stain. The odor will disappear once the area dries completely.
When Gentle Cleaning Isn’t Enough: Try Heavy-Duty Solutions
If mild cleaning methods do not work, stronger stain removers may be necessary. Always test any product on a hidden area of the furniture first to avoid discoloration or damage.
Most stains can be removed without heavy-duty cleaners. However, in cases like spilled red wine or hot coffee, specialized products such as Wine Away can be effective. These products can remove deep stains quickly and save valuable time during your cleaning routine.
4. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
Some stains require multiple treatments. Even after cleaning the entire house, stubborn stains may still remain. Do not get discouraged—repeat the process as needed until the stain fades or disappears.
Wine stains, in particular, may require two or three cleaning sessions for full removal.
