Old Towels: How to Make them Even Softer?

Soft Towels: How to Make them Even Softer?

Old towels often become stiff, scratchy, and less absorbent over time. This usually happens due to a buildup of detergent, fabric softener residue, and minerals from hard water. The good news? With a few simple adjustments to your laundry routine, you can restore their softness and bring them close to feeling brand new again.

1. Wash with Vinegar

White vinegar acts as a natural fabric softener by breaking down detergent residue and mineral buildup. Add one cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to restore absorbency and softness.

2. Use Baking Soda

Baking soda helps lift dirt and residue while naturally softening fabrics. Add ½ cup of baking soda to your regular wash cycle along with detergent.

3. Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softeners may feel helpful at first, but they coat towel fibers over time, reducing absorbency and causing stiffness. Skip fabric softener entirely—or use it very sparingly.

4. Dry Towels on Low Heat

High heat damages towel fibers and makes them rough. Choose a low-heat dryer setting or line-dry when possible. Adding dryer balls or clean tennis balls helps fluff towels naturally.

5. Use Less Detergent

Excess detergent is one of the main reasons towels become stiff. Use less detergent than recommended, and consider an extra rinse cycle to fully remove residue.

6. Try a Towel-Only Wash

Washing towels on their own prevents friction and tangling with other laundry items, helping them retain their softness longer.

7. Soften Towels with Ammonia

Ammonia can remove heavy detergent and fabric softener buildup. Add ½ cup of ammonia to the wash cycle (never mix with bleach).

8. Add Epsom Salt or Softening Tablets to the Wash

Epsom salt helps break down residue and soften fibers. Add ½ cup of Epsom salt to the wash.
If you live in a hard-water area, water-softening tablets can reduce mineral buildup and extend towel life.

9. Shake Out Towels Before Drying

Give towels a firm shake before placing them in the dryer. This loosens fibers and improves fluffiness once dry.

10. Refresh with a Vinegar and Baking Soda Soak

For extremely stiff towels:

  • Fill your washer with hot water

  • Add 1 cup white vinegar and soak towels for 1 hour

  • Drain, then wash with ½ cup baking soda and regular detergent

This method removes deep buildup and restores softness effectively.

Why Do Towels Get Stiff?

Towels lose softness when fibers can no longer “breathe.” Detergent residue, mineral buildup, excessive heat, and age all contribute to stiffness and reduced absorbency. Proper care keeps cotton fibers open, fluffy, and effective.

With these simple towel-softening techniques, you can revive old towels and make them soft, absorbent, and comfortable again—without replacing them. Small changes in washing habits can make a big difference in fabric longevity.
